Busselton to Albany (days 43 to 44 - Feb. 18, 2023 to Feb. 19, 2023)

Albany and a bit of family history

Day 43

Packed up our things and left the Airbnb for Canal Rocks. This is a spectacular spot, especially with the weather we had. Rolling waves crash against the red rocks which have been worn down by the years of waves.

There are lots of wineries along the coast down towards Albany. Near the turnoff to get to Canal Rocks there is a nice looking winery I stopped by, just to take a few pictures :)

We had a bit of a picnic lunch at Surfer’s Point near Margret River.

After lunch we parted ways, Shannon, Kristin, and Liam headed back home, while I went on towards Albany. There are a bunch of caves along the way and I stopped at one called Mammoth Cave.

The cave gets its name from its size. Large caverns cut through the hillside with stalagmites and stalactites covering the cave floor and ceiling. Quite beautiful in its own way.

Eventually made it to Albany and went to sleep for the night.

Day 44

Albany is a small town along the southern coast of Australia. The town wraps the coastline and a few hills in the center. My Dad spent his childhood here, so it was really neat to see some of the spots he has good memories of.

I attended the church that my grandfather was a pastor of during his time in Albany, Free Reformed Church of Albany. Dad was visiting here a few months ago and he mentioned that the building has not changed much at all since his time here. Even the benches looked like the same ones, just reupholstered.

Went to Mount Clarence and Mount Adelaide, a couple of the hills in the middle of Albany. Princess Royal Fortress is an old military base dating back to 1893. The fort was closed in 1956 and eventually the area was turned into a park and museum with memorials to commemorate the Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps).

Drove over to the home my Dad and his family grew up in. It has changed a lot since his time here back in the olden days :D It is in a nice location, set part-ways up one of the hills, overlooking Middleton Beach, less than a 5 minute drive away.

Last stop in the evening was Sandpatch and the Albany Wind Farm to catch the last little bits of sunlight.
