Across the sea to Stari Grad

Day 57

The plan for the day was to take a ferry across the Adriatic Sea to the island of Hvar and a town there called Stari Grad. Joel and I got a little morning jog in as we rushed to reach the ferry after reaching the ticket booth a bit later than we would have liked :D Right after we got onto the ferry, they closed the ramp and off we went on the two hour ride to Hvar.

Once we arrived at the port in Stari Grad, we made our way towards the town which was about a ten minute walk from the ferry terminal. Stari Grad is a quiet little town set on an inlet on the island. After stopping at one of the bakeries we set out up one of the hills nearby to an overlook. We may have taken a path most of the way up the hill before turning back to find the proper route :) Upon arriving at the top we were greeted with a great vantagepoint of the surrounding landscape.

Once we had taken in the views while enjoying the warmth of the sunlight, we made our way back down to the town where we stopped for lunch at one of the pizzerias. I had one of the best lasagnas (one of my favorite foods) with fresh squeezed lemon juice to go with.

Throughout the morning we had tried, without success, to rent bikes and electric scooters so we could travel to the city of Hvar across the island a ways. No matter what we tried, it wasn’t happening (story of my life haha). The scooter places were not open until April when tourist season starts. The bike app was not working, so that was out of the picture as well.

We ended up going on foot out into the countryside where there were fields surrounded by stone walls, laid out in a grid pattern. The area is called Stari Grad Plain which is an ancient Greek agricultural plain from the 4th century BC, still with its original walls. Lots of olive trees dotted the plots of farmland along with smaller gardens for vegetables. Along the way we went past a few people who live on the island. It is one of those places where everybody seems to know everybody in the area. It was quite a nice calm walk, other than the two vicious dogs that barked us off their lawn, just admiring the beautiful creation around us. There seemed to be a lot more signs of spring on this island than I have noticed elsewhere in the Split area. Flowers are starting to blossom in the fields and on the hillsides.

Eventually we turned back and walked through another little section in the town, where we saw a few more church buildings and the local cemetery. We made it back to the ferry terminal with some time to spare this time, learned from our past mistakes :D.

In total we ended up walking 12 miles throughout the day, the new tour record (I may have paced the kitchen a few extra steps to get my total from 11.7 miles to 12 :D ). Wasn’t too difficult to fall asleep after the day’s activities :)

Saying of the day:

Punctuality is not just limited to arriving at a place at right time, it is also about taking actions at right time
