Zagreb, Croatia (days 52 & 53 - Feb. 27 & 28, 2023)

Day 52

Retracing my steps from the previous day, I made my way past the National Theatre towards the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum. What Google didn’t tell me was that the museum was closed on Mondays. It is a little unfortunate that I am here in the winter, I think more of the tourist attractions would have better hours during peak season. The Botanic Garden was also closed for the winter season.

I headed towards the train station instead to take some photos. Zagreb is not a very large city, around 850,000 people live here. There are a few train stations throughout the city. The one I visited did not seem very big, but apparently it is the largest in Croatia.

Spent the rest of the day relaxing in a quiet sitting area at the hotel.

Walk through time

A 40 minute walk from my hotel is Mirogoj Cemetery. It is such a beautiful area to walk through. High brick walls wrap the cemetery grounds with copper domed towers every so often breaking up the wall. Large trees covered in ivy shade the snow-covered gravestones below. There is a large church at the entrance called, Christ the King Church, also under construction. I learned that there was a 5.5 magnitude earthquake, only 7 km north of the city center, back in 2020, probably explains all the construction projects going on at many of the old structures here.

Inside the cemetery walls is the Chapel of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (built in 1891), the yellow building with green domes in the pictures below.

Just outside the walls is a funeral home, Mirogoj - Mrtvačnica.

A few more photos from the travel to and from the cemetery. I overheard a tour guide talking about the cathedral spires. The cathedral was constructed out of limestone, a very soft material which doesn’t hold up well to rain over time. If you look a the picture below, you can see the left spire has been restored and the right one is in the process of being updated now.

One more full day left in Zagreb and then it is off to the next city in southern Croatia where I will meet up with Joel.
