Zagreb, Croatia (day 50 - Feb. 25, 2023)

The rainy streets of Zagreb

Day 50

Jet lag hit me pretty hard this time around. Woke up bright and early at 3am only to finally fall back to sleep around 6 for a couple more hours. Rain fell off and on throughout the day, and the temperatures started to drop as the day wore on. Snow is in the forecast for Sunday. No big plans for the day other than finding a barber shop for a haircut and then some more casual street wandering.

Without much direction, I stumbled into a small underground market near where the daily farmers market is held. There were lots of meat vendors and a few selling spices and oils.

I really love the buildings here. They are all build in a similar style, but many of them have small domes that make them unique from the next.

I wanted to find a cafe to do some ‘work’ (cause all this travel is sooo much work :D ) on my laptop, but found most in the area aren’t really set up for that. A lot of them only have outdoor seating areas or very small indoor areas which were mostly pretty packed with people. It seems like they don’t really have coffee shops more similar to what we have back home. All the other countries I visited had places where you could hang out for a few hours and do some laptop work. Kind of an interesting discovery to me. maybe there are more modern areas of the city where that is more common, not sure.

After a quick google search, I went to one that was ‘laptop friendly’, but found it to be quite cramped, with very limited seating. You know how big my personal bubble is :D Had some coffee and decided to look for a viewpoint that overlooked the city.

There is an area of town up a bit of a hill which has some churches at the top, as well as a lookout tower. There was once an old town located at the top of the hill, known as Gradec (meaning Upper Town). This area along with Kaptol previously made up the medieval center of Zagreb.

The cathedral with the aqua colored spire is Greek Catholic Co-cathedral of St. Cyril and Methodius. St. Mark's Church is the building with the crazy patterned roof. The second to last photo is of the Stone Gate, the former town entrance during the medieval times.

Spent the remainder of the evening learning some basic photo editing. It is nice to have something to occupy the evening hours with.
